What is Computerised Dentistry?

Cad Cam technology  allows the dentist  and technician to fabricate tooth coloured restorations from porcelain with accuracy and predictability. Often with no impressions and in one visit.

CEREC® by Sirona Dental Systems is the world's first and only chairside CAD/CAM restorative device. Currently over 40 thousand dentists worldwide have adopted this technology.

Backed by more than 250 clinical studies over the last 20 years, CEREC has provided dental restorative solutions to millions of patients and dentists worldwide. CEREC by Sirona is one of the most advanced products in world dentistry with over 6 million restorations worldwide. Sirona?s CEREC CAD/CAM dental restoration method simultaneously designs and mills, enabling the dentist to prepare perfectly fitted ceramic restorations in one patient visit.

Solid blocks of ceramic material are converted into  inlays, onlays, partial crowns, full anterior and posterior crowns or veneers. Theses restorations can fit with less than 50 microns sealant ( less than the diameter of the avarage human hair) and are bonded to the tooth using a "composite" tooth coloured  sealant. This chameleon contact lens effect means that the join cannot be seen.  The final result is aesthetic and adhesive boding can allow design changes, so healthy tooth material can be saved and the strength of the tooth preserved as much as possible.

The name CEREC stands for Ceramic Reconstruction. The method was developed by Prof. W. Mörmann and Dr. M. Brandestini in 1980 at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. The first patients had been treated with CEREC inlays in 1985 at the University of Zurich. From this time CEREC has undergone continuous technical and clinical developments. Today it is used worldwide by a growing number of dentists in Irish practices.
